Fall 2021, 13 weeks
Looking back, it’s alarming to think I almost didn’t go to Barcelona because I was scared of “falling behind.” My time abroad was one of the greatest experiences of my life. While I doubted whether study abroad would improve my design skills, I quickly learned that being in a new place gave me a chance to look at everything I took for granted with fresh eyes, and tremendously expanded how I viewed the world.
I studied design at Elisava during the Fall 2021 semester and I finally experienced design outside of the classroom. I learned about type by going to museums and simply noticing the different street signs in the cities I visited. I fell in love with color again—being surrounded by beautiful shades of yellow amidst breathtaking buildings made even gray rainy skies appear bright. I found myself studying the packaging of the water bottles in super markets and admiring the street fashion. I came to Barcelona not knowing what to expect from the wondrous, historical city. And I left with a new appreciation for color, typography, packaging, shopping, and life itself. I was scared to leave design behind, but leaving campus helped me realize just how much my view of the world was forever shaped by my time in Carnegie Mellon Design. After time away, I’m returning with a newfound gratitude for everything this school has taught me — a lesson I may have taken for granted had I never taken the chance to go.

Painting With Ashley Burbano
An expression of my love for painting and getting lost in the flow state.
Odds & Ends
I created an earring collection that uses wasted fabric scraps from partnered fashion brand to bring awareness and reduce waste in the fashion industry.
Iterations & Explorations
From this process I learned how valuable it is to examine what the public perception of a brand’s values may be and make sure that they are aligned with the company’s values and goals.
Outfits In Barcelona
During my last month in Barcelona, I did a daily vlog and included my outfits from each day. These were some of my favorite looks.
